The Institute of European Studies is the youngest independent organizational unit of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science – the biggest (in terms of number of students) faculty of the University of Warsaw. The Institute was created from the transformation of the Chair of European Studies, which was functioning on the Faculty between 2004 and 2012. Since the academic year 2009/2010 the function of director of Chair of European Studies, and now the Institute of European Studies is in the hands of  prof. Konstanty Adam Wojtaszczyk.

The Institute of European Studies is educating students on the field of study of European studies on under- and post-graduate studies. From the academic year 2014/2015 there are planned new under- and post-graduate studies taught in English - European administration. There are now around 600 students in the Institute. Among them there is one of the biggest group of students from abroad on the University of Warsaw.

The Institute of European Studies is conducting research in the field of European Studies. These research concentrate mainly on methodological problems of European studies, law and institutional dimension of the European Union, implementation of European policies as well as cultural, historical, social and political aspects of the European integration. Currently in the Institute there are conducted several projecets financed by National Science Center: Kryzysy w procesie integracji europejskiej i sposoby ich przezwyciężania, Badanie stanu dyscyplin "nauka o stosunkach międzynarodowych" i "studia europejskie" w Polsce, integracji europejskiej. Moreover the Institute is conducting many more interesting research projects. Between 2009 and 2013 the Institute's employees published more than 50 monographs, nearly 150 chapters in Polish and foreign monographs and more than 60 scientific articles, academic reviews and dictionary entries. The Institute also publishes a scientific quarterly "Przegląd Europejski".

Besides research activity and education, the Institute is offering many initiatives aimed at students of other institutes and universities, including foreign ones, as well as high school students – e.g. lectures during "Day without Us", courses and competitions for high school students, lectures in high schools and summer schools.
